Position: Senior Pneumatic-Fluid Power Designer

Department: Fluid Power

Reports to: Engineering Manager

 

Job Brief

We are looking for a Senior Pneumatic-Fluid Power Designer to design pneumatic and fluid power systems and schematics for custom automated assembly equipment. This job involves collaboration with the other Design and Build departments to design safe, creative, and cost-effective pneumatic control systems.

 

Responsibilities

  • Review machine concept and function with Mechanical design, Electrical Design, Controls group and the Mechanical Machine Builders
  • Review quotation and Project Requirements form to determine the customer’s requirements
  • Participate and provide leadership in Machine Safety Risk Assessments with the Project team
  • Identify and evaluate System Risks, required System Performance Levels (Pl) and apply safety solutions in accordance to ISO 13849 to reduce the machine risk to acceptable levels
  • Design Cell/Station fluid power systems (mostly Pneumatic)
    • apply fluid power industry design standards (CSA-Z432 Machine Safeguarding, CSA-Z434 Industrial Robots, CSA-Z142 Power Press)
    • confirm actuator port sizes as well as performing any calculations to ensure proper flow of air is supplied to meet the cycle time of actuator
    • calculate total air flow required to operate the Cell or Station, and complete the design of the air preparation circuit
    • Confirm that proper control of circuit has been provided, ie: flow controls, P.O. check valves, directional control valves etc., as per Safety requirements, Customer Specifications, and the mechanical design intent of the device
  • Meet with Project Manager and team members to ensure project deliverables are tracking per schedule and scope
  • Generate fluid power drawing packages
  • Review the design with the Lead Mechanical Developer (and Mech/Elec designers as required), confirm valve bank placement, system design, routing, electrical interfaces
  • Generate a complete Bill of Materials (BOM) for purchased components
  • Assists other IAI personnel during the equipment build, observes and monitors how the build is progressing
  • Completes “as built” drawing updates on machinery when required, reviews updates/changes with the other departments when required
  • Work with Technical Manual writer to ensure that proper drawings and documentation are submitted into the Technical Manual package prior to machine shipping
  • Keep abreast of new technologies and research new processes and methodologies
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the department, creating and maintaining design process.
  • Prioritize multiple projects utilizing time management with respect to all phases of a project
  • Prepare and present customer projects in a professional manner
  • Adhere to IAI’s ISO9001 quality policy and procedures
  • Participate in 5s activities as required
  • Occasional travel as required globally

Qualifications

  • Minimum Diploma in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering or Equivalent Specialized Experience
  • Minimum 7 Years’ Work Experience
  • Proficient in EPLAN with Fluid add on, AutoCAD/Draftsight, Edrawings
  • MS Office Software (Word, Excel)
  • Good understanding of Assembly processes including but not limited to: Welding, Dispensing, Pressing, Part feeding, Material handling, etc.
  • Good understanding of pneumatics and fluid power engineering
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the following Safety Codes
    • ISO 13849: Safety of Machinery-Safety Related Parts of Control Systems
    • CSA Z432_Safeguarding of Machinery
    • CSA Z142_Power Press Operation
    • CSA Z434_Robot Safety
