Senior Mechanical Designer

Position: Sr. Mechanical Designer

Reports to: Mechanical Design Group Leader

 

Job Brief:

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Designer to draw upon your engineering knowledge, your industry experience, and your ability to find creative solutions to unique challenges. You will have a passion for designing custom automation machines and you will thrive in the environment where you will mentor and guide other designers, collaborate with the other Design and Build departments, and provide leadership in all aspects of the design process.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Sales team and Customer to understand project requirements and machine concepts
  • Provide design solutions for custom, non-standard equipment. Develop sales concepts into detailed 3D CAD models using creative problem solving and application of engineering theory
  • Delegate duties and coordinate the design process with Junior, Intermediate, and Contractor resources.
  • Mentor and support Junior and Intermediate level mechanical designers
  • Review designs of project team, checking for scope intent, functionality, simplicity, and manufacturability
  • Collaborate with equipment vendors to properly size and select machine components, including confirmation of availability. (Motors, actuators, sensors, etc)
  • Conduct design reviews to customer for approval, prior to manufacturing
  • Meet with Project Manager and team members to ensure project deliverables are tracking per schedule and scope
  • Collaborate with other departments to achieve project goals
  • Identify Machine Safety items and provide design direction in accordance to relevant safety codes and principles.
  • Ability to create and facilitate Machine Safety Risk Assessments with the Project team
  • Prepare detailed manufacturing component and assembly drawings per IA standards
  • Collaborate with other branches of the Engineering Group to coordinate proper ordering and implementation of electromechanical and or fluid power devices
  • Release Bill of Materials into IA purchasing software, reviewing for accuracy and delivery dates
  • Supervise or complete the creation of cycle time charts, Input-Out Lists and I-O Drawings for the Controls Team
  • Supports Build team as required during the Assembly and Development of the equipment
  • Update designs and drawings upon development and project completion
  • Properly identify service and wear components for documentation team
  • Contribute ideas for Continuous Improvement projects that improve the departments operation and efficiency
  • Occasional global travel as required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent specialized experience
  • 7+ years of designing custom Industrial Automation machines
  • Application of Engineering principles to validate design concepts
  • Good understanding of Assembly processes, pneumatics, and control system basics
  • Proficiency with Solidworks
  • Working knowledge of relevant Safety Codes and Risk Assessment experience
  • Strong communication, presentation, organizational, and problem-solving skills
